Black doll White doll

In class, a topic that has been addressed a lot recently is weather or not schools should teach the "Salad Bowl" metaphor to their children, so that these students some how become educated about multiculturalism at an early age. I have attached a video that I believe, supports why we should teach children about multiculturalism as quickly as possible. In this experiment, 15 out of 21 black children preferred to play with the a white doll over the black doll. When asked why the white doll was good, children would respond by saying, "Because he is white." Clearly, children at a very young age are exposed and aware of the racial differences in our society. This study shows how black children develop low self-esteem because they think that white people, are "good" and that black people are "bad". I think that in some way or another, multiculturalism needs to be taught to young children no matter what. Children at a young age need to learn that it is a good thing that there are multiple ethnicity's in our society, and that they should not be ashamed of their ethnicity.

  1. This video goes to show that weather we teach the children or not, that thier is something they are seeing and hearing from within' society that will teach them the wrong things abouth themself's and others. Yes I think alot of time with minorities people dont relize that alot of the issues within these minorities communities comes from skewed views of themselfs and low self esteem issues. Which just further set people up for failures later on in life.

  2. I've seen this study done before and it's sad to see little kids dislike the color of their skin. It wouldn't make sense for a parent to put in a child's head that their skin color is bad but it does make sense for the society to do so. Same with models we see in magazines. Tall, skin and white is what they believe is best when really it's not real. It's all computer touched up pictures that are supposed to represent women. Society as a whole has to start making changes, otherwise we may not be able to get to the point where people can just live and not care about skin color, size or shape anymore.
